What People Are |
... What is important is that you are "prepared" when you go to China. The best way to do this is to purchase a copy of Ruth Lor Malloy's book, "China Guide". She goes to China two or three times a year to check out old listings and new facilities that are coming on stream. She's extremely frank.
If a hotel or restaurant is "filthy" she uses that word to describe it. If you want to know the best mode of transportation once you're in China, she has it documented, even as far as price. If you want to plan side trips from a major city, she tells you how to avoid tourist traps, and
indicates points of interest off the beaten track that might satisfy your sense of adventure.
Malloy lives in Toronto and knows what questions the North American traveller has.. She provides a concise yet rich history of China, which is more instructive to read, even if you never get there! She tells about shopping, etiquette, cuisine (what to choose and what to avoid), politics, health precautions... and I know you can trust every word, so
thorough is her research.
... If you get the impression I'm promoting Ruth book, you're right on... If there's a secular Bible on China, that country of great mystery and magical beauty, this book has to be it.
-- LorraineWilliams, Travel Writer. My husband and I just got back from three weeks in China, and I wanted to thank you and congratulate you on the excellence of your China Guide. As a recovered guidebook writer, I know how much hard work and thinking went into the project. It's accurate, witty, useful and a comfort to rely on.
Incidentally, thanks to your description of the synagogue-museum in Shanghai, I alerted my whole group and about 12 people went, including our local guide.
He obviously had been there often before and knew the surrounding
neighborhood very well. It was an absolute high point of our trip.Thank you! --- Abby Rand, travel writer.
Had an amazing return visit to China, my fourth, in no small part
thanks to your book. --- Dodi Fromson.
I have looked at Ruth's web site and it looks great, the content is excellent, makes you want to know her and leaves you with the feeling that she is a very interesting woman. --- Paulette MarsollierYour China Guide has provided me with so much information about
China. Thank you!
It was most helpful to me when I was working on a series of large
abstract oil paintings that I called "Seeking Pagoda" or as the
exhibition was called "Pagoda". The canvases were inspired by descriptions you wrote for different pagodas. I have long been curious about these structures and China. While I was painting "Pagoda" I was wandering through China in my mind, seeking what was unknown to me.
I am now painting abstracts with ink on paper. I organized an
exhibition - "Dragons Within" of new ink paintings by Chinese and
American artists for a gallery in New York
September 28 - October 16, 1999.
The other artists are Deng Lin, Zhang Xiuzhu, Li Xiaolin, and Ma
Qingxiong. It's at VIRIDIAN Artists Inc., 24 West 57th Street, NY
NY 10019, tel/fax 212 245 2882." --- Judith Funkhouser.***
I am leading a press trip to Shanghai and Beijing next month and have
been using the guide to help me with the itinerary and have suggested
it to the writers coming with me. (We regularly promote the guide with travel writers!). --Ellen Levy, Shangri-La Hotels.***
"I use your guidebook as my sole reference when planning all different aspects of my tours to China (I lead several tours there each year). Your book has been a tremendous help to me and is the most readable and useful one out there, as far as I'm concerned.
"I tell all my tour participants to purchase the book as good background material for a trip to China in general. (Naturally, I have a whole handbook I've prepared for them myself on the Jewish history of China and the various special sights to see in Shanghai and Kaifeng on that score, plus newspaper articles, etc., but I recommend they take your book with them on the tour for the days off in certain cities, too, so that they can scout around on their own.)" --
