              China Travel Current Information

I travel to China several times a year mainly for fun but also to check out hotels and new tourist attractions for my book. The following information is not in my 2002 book.

The following items are dated with the month the information was obtained. Everything is subject to change but this should give you a good idea of what to expect. Please also look at our collection of photos from some of these places.

Guangzhou

I wanted to experience the new Shangri-La in Guangzhou because it is next door to the Guangzhou International Convention Centre which houses the twice-a-year Canton Trade Fair. It is a very important and convenient location for business people.

My sister was astounded at the service. Not only did a hotel limo pick us up in nearby Foshan, but at my request in advance of our one-night stay, it booked us a flight from Guangzhou to Beijing for Y640, an excellent discount. Our driver did not answer his cell phone when he was driving, much to my relief, and the limo was much more comfortable than any taxi. When we asked at the hotel where the washroom was, a staff member took us there personally. As for a newspaper, there was none of this “over there” stuff. “I’ll get it for you,” came the cheerful reply.

But this was not my first Shangri-la hotels. I have come to expect nothing less than top service.

We arrived early evening, in time to sample the Happy Hour hors d'oeuvres in its Horizon floor lounge: beef kebobs, cheeses, petits fours, tiny Vietnamese spring rolls, tiny crab cakes, crème brulee, and chocolate cream cake. We didn’t bother going to dinner after that. The view from there of the Pearl River, Guangzhou, and the Trade Fair’s Pazhou Complex was wonderful. Next morning’s breakfast there was even better as was our swim in its indoor pool from which we could also see the river. We had time for a tour of the hotel before heading for the airport and adding it to our “highly recommended” category – if you can afford it. We could find nothing wrong with it. The web-site is http://www.shangri-la.com/en/property/guangzhou/shangrila/infocard  and it’s at 1 Hui Zhan Dong Road, Hai Zhu District, Guangzhou, 510308. Tel. ?86 20 8917 6391.

Part of the Canton Trade Fair is currently also housed in the old Trade Fair Building on Liuhua across the street from the China Hotel. The Shangri-La will become an even more important location when phase 2 of the Convention Centre is opened, hopefully by the next fair in April 2008. After its new Phase 3 is operational, the entire Canton Fair will be located at Pazhou. During the last fair, the Liuhua Complex was home to textiles and garments, medicines and health, and gifts. The Pazhou Complex housed industrial products and consumer goods.

The Liuhua Complex is approximately 40 mins away from the Shangri-la and a taxi from the hotel to there costs approximately RMB 50. The Shangri-La is 500 meters from the Pazhou subway station on Line 2. From there, you can take the Metro to Gong Yuan Xian station and transfer to Line 1 to Liu Hua Station. This way, you can avoid traffic jams. This takes about 30 minutes and costs RMB 6.

For more information on the trade fair, which is China’s largest, click on: http://www.cantonfair.org.cn/en/index.asp  . RLM. Date June, 2007.
